![]() Like with many of Whelan’s books, Angel on the Square does a marvelous job of merging a mostly truthful look into the past with an intriguing storyline and characters. Readers are also able to get a glimpse of World War I through reports of Misha, who is drafted into the war, and also get to witness the notoriously insular Tsar and his family. Whelan does a remarkable job of showing Katya’s slow awakening from a pampered and naïve aristocrat to a worldly young woman. Set in a country ready to fall apart, the book spans five years, giving the reader a clear idea of the events that precipitated the tragic time in Russian history.
