Hochschild brings to life this troubled period, which stretched from 1917 to 1921, through the interwoven tales of some well-known characters, like the sphinxlike Woodrow Wilson and the ambitious young bureaucrat J. This was America during and after the Great War: a brief but appalling era blighted by torture, censorship, and killings. An astonishing 250,000 people joined a nationwide vigilante group-sponsored by the Department of Justice. Well over a thousand men and women were jailed solely for what they had written or said, even in private. Angry mobs burned Black churches to the ground and chased down pacifists and immigrants. Adam Hochschild returns to The Commonwealth Club with his revelatory new account of a pivotal but neglected period in American history: World War I and its stormy aftermath, when bloodshed and repression on the home front nearly doomed American democracy.

Jenna hit the nail on the head!! Every single, and I mean EVERY SINGLE, artist and song that she mentioned in the book I love!! And it really keeps my attention when authors work in music to their books. So many museums, Native-American history, and restaurants galore!! Can someone buy me a plane ticket please?Īs most of you know, I'm a sucker for music. I also loved visiting the different parts of New Mexico with the two of them. I liked the vivid descriptions of the hot-air balloons and how she tied them into the growing relationship between Isabella and Logan. I really enjoyed a lot of things about this book. Taking Isabella out on the town to show off her new home, the two quickly become inseperable with a bond that we can only dream about!! Can we say, yummy pool boy please? But he turns out to be so much more than that. Isabella makes it to New Mexico, only to be quickly introduced to that hunky house caretaker, Logan Hayes. Relocating from Florida to her aunt's house in New Mexico after being divorced after only 6 months of marriage - she seems strong, independent, and just ready for a new start!! We are introduced to 21 year old Isabella Reed. Jenna does a lovely job at bringing her main characters to life and is amazing at making you feel like you can taste, hear, smell, and see everything that she's describing. "When God paints the sky, he doesn not mess around."Įven though I only gave this book 3 of 5 stars - I did really enjoy it. Haunting Adeline is an exact definition of a scary book for adults, though this is rated 18, I would say it suits audiences ages 20 and up. This scary book is not for the faint of heart. So, I would like to review this book by starting with a warning. This is really one of those scary books for adults because it has some explicit contents that are vividly described. Haunting Adeline ( Cat and Mouse Duet #1) These books are deep and meaningful and have a lot to offer aside from just being creepy. These books, to take note of, are those types that basically go out of the usual expectations of the scary genre. So, if you’re in search of some, I’m recommending the 3 scariest books of all time. Lots are out there in the market but few good scary books are rare to find. Do you know what I mean like when you read or discuss your favorite horror books with your friends, you both enjoy and get scared together? The world is being swept by the rise of scary book stories. The good thing with scary books for adults is that it thrills us, rushes our adrenaline, and at the same time entertains us.īest scary horror books help us positively channel fear. It’s fun to read stuff that frightens us. The New World is discovered by the Chinese, who rapidly settle the west coast, while an Islamic fleet lands at the mouth of the Mississippi. India, caught between superpowers, struggles to maintain its independence until, fueled by a scientific renaissance, its forces besiege and conquer the great city that in our world would be called Constantinople. With Europeans now no more than a historical curiosity, the empires of China and Islam spread rapidly across the world. It's the 14th century, and the Black Death has swept through Europe, killing not 30% or 40% of the population but 99%. Having revolutionized the novel of planetary exploration with his Nebula- and Hugo-winning Mars trilogy ( Red Mars, etc.), Robinson is attempting to do the same to another genre with this highly realistic and credible alternate history. The eco-terrorists are attempting to create a series of apparently natural disasters and fool the public into believing that the events are the result of the adverse effects of global warming. State of Fear couples Crichton's scientific research and data with a fast-paced plot in which a small group of individuals attempt to thwart the actions of an eco-terrorist group. However, references to real people, institutions, and organizations that are documented in footnotes are accurate. In the novel's preface, he writes that "this is a work of fiction…. He employs dozens of footnotes and graphs throughout the novel that go hand in hand with the fiction. Though Crichton's novel is a work of fiction, it relies heavily on scientific data and research. He pored over numerous texts dealing with the environment, pollution, global warming, and environmental policy. Before publishing State of Fear in 2004, Michael Crichton spent three years researching the novel. Suspense aside, the rest of the story was a beautiful romance and also a great friend story. I loved how honest David was, and how he and Olivia fought for their relationship. I couldn’t wait to read David Hunter’s story, and it didn’t disappoint. Soon Olivia and David are scouring the city for a calculating criminal who seems tantalizingly close-and is moving in for the kill. But while he and Olivia try to face the wall of pain between them, a diabolical puppet master is pulling strings to make a group of twentysomethings do his bidding. That footage from Ronnie Scott's is hard to beat, too And it is certainly not the first time they have traded licks onstage watching them duke it out on Further On Up The Road in 1981 – Clapton on a Strat, Beck on a Telecaster – is pure fire. It’s not the first time Clapton and Beck have performed a duet on the track, most notably it featured on their 2010 Together And Apart Tour, which was captured for posterity on an epic live DVD. It’s apt, then, that it would go on to be adapted by guitar’s most original player. Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer would collect an Academy Award that year for Best Original Song. Here, Beck’s Fender Stratocaster picks up the melody line first laid down by Audrey Hepburn in Blake Edward’s 1961 romcom Breakfast At Tiffany’s. The two Yardbirds have a very different but distinctive way of addressing the electric guitar and the sounds they get out of the instrument. Getting Clapton and Beck on record together is always a treat.
